Completion Time

Completion time will be defined in your building agreement with your builder.  Each builder will have a slightly different completion date but generally construction will take between four to eight months. (Note: Recently some areas have seen an increase in time necessary to complete construction of a new home.  Some areas are taking as much as a year to complete.  Check with different builders in your area to find out how long construction is taking.)

In your building agreement the "start date" (which is the date that legally begins the construction date count down) will differ from agreement to agreement.  Depending on when this start date begins a builder may have more time to complete your home then your might realize.  Some start dates begin when the permit is issued, others when the notice of commencement is recorded, still others when dirt is moved.  Make sure to read your agreement to know exactly when your start date begins to avoid confusion.  (Note: It is a good idea to know this information prior to signing your building  agreement so that if necessary you can negotiate a better time table.)

A good builder will provide a construction schedule and updates to that schedule through out construction. Find out if the builder you're considering does.  If not you may want to go with a builder that does.  A builder that provides that kind of information is well organized and shows that they are on top of construction.  It also allows you to best prepare for your future move.
