Today we are hearing more and more about "smart homes"
home theaters and home automation. Chances are
that your new home will have some type of smart house feature like an appliance, phone, video or alarm system. What your builder, realtor or electrician may not be as aware of is how affordable some of this technology can be.X-10
or radio frequency signals are changing the way we turn on and off our lights, make our morning coffee and maintain better home security. Simple wireless remote light switches and timers can start at less then $50.00 for a starter kit. Garage
openers can be programmed to turn on a series of lights inside and outside your home for as little as $35.00. You can install motorized drape,
sliding door, skylight and dialup devices which can allow a homeowner to check on the home systems, arm or disarm the alarm system, and even change the
inside temperature. This type of technology alone can be installed starting at $1,000.00 or less. Whole house systems such as ELAN Home Systems which integrate
the security, video, media, computer and wireless remote systems can be completely installed as well. These systems can be very expensive and typically range from about $2,500 to $25,000 and more. If
high speed internet bandwidth (access) is important to you, CAT-5 network data lines are being installed more and more in individual homes and may be an option you might want to consider. With DSL, cable, and satellite internet services
becoming part of home media and computer centers, homeowners are
desiring small home local-area-networks (LANs). LANs can be pre-wired for as little as $200 or less and allow homeowners to network all the home's computers and media devices together. If your building a new home check
with your builder as to what options they offer and what types of systems they have installed. Ask to meet with the electrician to discuss what options they can help you with. In both cases do not be surprised if you are aware of products with
which they are not. Unless an electrician or builder has been specializing in smart home installation they may not be aware home automation options but are generally all too willing to work with you.
Many home theater systems and home automation systems are simple to install and can be retrofitted to most homes.
